Do your own lava lamp and learn the interesting fact about density
in science. It is a very interesting project which your kids enjoy for sure. Now Prepare yourself in a work area and wipe towel where you can easily
clean up any spills.
Materials Required:
- Clean glass or plastic
container (If want more lava lamps take more bottles)
- Vegetable oil
- Water
- Fizzing tablets (like the
Alka-seltzer tablet)
- Food coloring
- Glitter if desired
Method
- Take a bottle and fill half of it with water. Add vegetable oil into the bottle to make it full and leave some space on the top of the bottle. ( Use a funnel if you have it with you.)
- Wait for some time and watch the oil and water get separated
- Then add your favorite food color, you can see the food color slides through the oil until it mixes with the water.
- Then keep your fizzy tablet breaking into two half. Drop one part of the fizzy tablet in the bottle. You can see the bubble blobs.
- Turn off the lights and drop another half of the fizzy tablet.
- If you have the flashlight, shine the flashlight through the bottle with a lava lamp. You can see the blobs are bubbling.
- Add glitters if desired you can
see the glitters shining with the bubbles
Science Behind
Oil and Water have different densities. Oil is less dense
(lighter) when compared with water hence it floats on top of the water.
Food color has the same density as water hence it slides through
the oil and mixes with water.
Fizzy tablet as it dissolves in water forms a gas named carbon
dioxide.
Gas is lighter than water so, once the gas is formed it floats at
the top bringing some food color with it. When the air gets released from the
water blob, the water becomes heavier again and sinks.
A Lava lamp works with liquid that does not mix with each other.
The real lava lamp consists of wax and water. The lamp inside heats the wax.
The wax when melted becomes less dense and starts to float on the top of the
water. As wax becomes cool it sinks down. This process repeats itself.
Experiment Further:
- Try with different sizes of bottles.
- Try with salt instead of the fizzing tablet
- Try dropping fizzing tablets at once instead of two half parts
- Try different liquids with
different densities
Different liquid has different properties to learn. Try mixing
water with milk, juices, or food color, it mixes easily. But oil and water stay
separated even if you stir vigorously it is all because of different
densities.
Hope you enjoyed the
lava lamp. Keep learning with fun.
